United Neighborhoods Initiative

Uniting our Neighborhoods
Through the United Neighborhood Initiative Adams County residents can find their voice in the county, organize and mobilize their neighborhoods, and discover resources to improve lives and develop a common vision.

Our Challenge – To Reignite and Develop Neighborhood Potential
Concerning the poorest neighborhoods of unincorporated Adams County, poverty creates a multitude of problems to address. This includes food insecurity, actual hunger, safety/crime issues and low home ownership.

These poorest residents need:
    • Programs that provide access to resources.
    • Investment in infrastructure from sources in addition to county resources.
    • An open door to communicate with and influence governmental agencies
and other entities that impact their lives.
    • A voice of identity for residents and for long-term (sometimes multi-
       generational) residents.

Our Solution – Adams County Foundation Supports Programs that Work on the Neighborhood Level
The United Neighborhood Initiative Program is engaged in community/neighborhood development. Our neighborhood group provides residents training in leadership, organizational strategy and establishes effective ways for neighborhoods to interact with government and agencies.

Our Results Speak for Themselves
Residents working with the United Neighborhoods Initiative have successfully negotiated increased infrastructural improvements from the county, have been able to work with Planning and Public Works, Water Districts, Park Districts, the Sheriff’s Office, and other departments to get assistance for their needs.

Organized residents have saved a library branch from closing, participated in planning discussions regarding light rail and U.S. Highway 36 widening, and produced neighborhood plans to guide the future development of neighborhoods.

Using existing resources, one resident set up a food cooperative in her neighborhood and hosted a "food fair" where over 200 families received free fruits, vegetables and other food items.

Our United Neighborhoods Initiative combined with Adams County Housing programs has rehabilitated 45 homes each year. Our "Helping Hands" program has enabled volunteers to fix-up 20-30 homes each year in targeted neighborhoods.

Your Donation to Adams County Foundation Supports

• Residents having a voice in their neighborhoods and a voice in their county.
    • A way for residents to learn about leadership – how to organize, conduct outreach,
how to mobilize neighborhood residents towards action.
    • The exposure to local and regional resources that can improve the lives of low
       to moderate-income residents.
    • Residents uniting with their neighbors to develop a common vision, and sense
       of purpose.
    • A way to engage and interact with the county and non-profit organizations to
identify neighborhood priorities for the future.
